Congratulations! You are pregnant and an entire new world begins to open to you. New terminology. New experiences. New questions. LOTS of questions. One question that I am often asked by parents is: “Why should I hire a doula?”
Good question! So, this is why you should consider a doula:
A doula does not take the place of partners or family as the support person. We are part of your team, and are more akin to a trail guide to help coach you through unfamiliar territory that is quite familiar to us. Partners and family members can be involved as much (or as little) as you feel comfortable.
Your doula will teach partners how to provide support to a laboring woman, reminding you of what you learned in those excellent childbirth classes. We explain terminology, share evidenced based information, reassure you when things are progressing normally, and provide guidance as you work towards your goals.
-John H Kennell, MD
A doula truly cares about you, however no one in that room will love you like your partner. A doula makes an effort to get to know you and your partner, but a doula will not have the intimate knowledge and personal insights about you like your partner.
Sometimes partners and family will need a break. A doula can free you to get food, take a walk, have a nap, or go home to let the dog out without feeling like your partner has been abandoned. We offer partners and family encouragement as well – after all, this is a special day for all of your family too!
Partners, family members, and your doula can work together to provide important comfort measures. Counter pressure, slow dancing, massages – doulas help you do them correctly. We strive to make you look like a hero as we come alongside you, guide you, and cheer you on!
Hopefully this answers your question of why you should consider using a doula. Feel free to contact us with any other questions you may have.
